Petr Berka

Associate professor at the Laboratory for Intelligent Systems, University of Economics.
Graduated from the Czech Technical University in 1983. In 1991, he received his PhD in Bionics. From 1984 to 87 he was a member of the Dept. of Biomathematics, Physiological Institute, Academy of Sciences. In 1988, he joined the University of Economics. Since 1995 he has been an Associate Professor in Computer Science at the Faculty of Informatics and Statistics, University of Economics, Prague. He is a member of the Czech Society of Cybernetics and Informatics, European Coordinating Committee for AI, and Special Interest Group for KDD.
He is also working in the EuroMISE - Cardio Centre, in the area of knowledge discovery and decision support
Research areas:
His research interests are expert systems, machine learning and knowledge discovery in databases. He was involved in the development of the expert system shells SAK and NEST and data mining tools KEX and LISp-Miner.
He coordinates the participation of the University of Economics in a number of EU funded research projects in the area of knowledge discovery in databases and intelligent systems: IST-1999-11993 (MiningMart), IST-2000-29207 (EUNITE), IST-2001-33086 (KDNet). Since 1999 he organises the Discovery Challenge workshop at European conferences on knowledge discovery in databases and machine learning (ECML/PKDD).

Jiri Kosek

He successfully finished his Master degree in knowledge engineering at
the University of Economics, Prague and now he works on his PhD thesis
there. Jirka Kosek is a freelance XML consultant and teacher at
University of Economics in Prague. He has over ten years experience in
providing XML consultancy and training. Jirka is an active member in
several standardization bodies -- OASIS (DocBook TC and RELAX NG TC),
W3C (XSL WG and ITS WG) and ISO/IEC JTC1/SC34 (DSDL, Topic Maps).
Jirka Kosek is an author of several books about Web technologies. He
also wrote numerous articles for IT developer magazines. In his free
time he is contributing code into DocBook XSL stylesheets open-source
project.

Hana Rezankova

She graduated from University of Economics, Prague (VSE) in 1979. In 1988, she received her CSc.
degree in Application Mathematics in Economy from VSE. From 1978 to 1990 she was a programmer in the Computing Center of VSE.
From 1990 she has been a member of the Department of Statistics and Probability at the Faculty of Informatics and Statistics
(FIS) of VSE: at first as a lecturer, from 1994 as an associate professor, and from 2008 as a professor. From 1998 to
2001 she was a vice-dean in charge of student study programmes.
She is a member of the Board of the Czech Statistical Society and a member of IASC (International Association for
Statistical Computing).

Vilem Sklenak
He finished his studies of management information systems in economics at the Prague University of Economics 1985 and has been working in the Department as assistant professor since this time. He is the Head of the Department.
Main research area is application of database systems in information services with special attention to text information and relational database systems and their power in factographical information processing. Leader of TeX working group.

Petr Strossa
Petr Strossa finished study of theoretical cybernetics, mathematical informatics and theory of systems at Charles University, Prague, in 1985.
He teaches in the department of information & knowledge engineering of the Prague University of Economics since 1985 (assistant professor 1988). He acquired the degree of CSc. (PhD.) at the Prague University of Economics in 1992.
Research areas:
His basic research domain is computational linguistics and its application in scientific & technical information processing. He has developed a software system for machine aided (i.e., not fully automatic, but 'computerized') translation of short expert texts from English to Czech (SPPS - main theme of his PhD. thesis). He has designed a software tool for generating NL sentences expressing association rules mined from a database (AR2NL).
Teaching activities:
P. Strossa gives basic courses on computer applications in information processing and specialized courses on methods of computational linguistics and algorithms in text information processing (also at the Silesian University, Opava).
